Strikes are an integral part of the collective bargaining process and as such must be understood in relation to their determinants in order to properly evaluate the performance of that process. In spite of the importance of such knowledge there has been surprisingly little effort devoted to estimating empirical relationships.

This study attempts to present an economic background to the Winnipeg General Strike and in particular examine in detail the wages and working conditions that prevailed prior to and during those eventful days. In the past the Winnipeg General Strike has been considered from primarily a political and social viewpoint. If we accept the views of Mr. Robson, K.C., head of the Royal Commission that investigated the strike, the economic issues are of more importance.

Very little has been thought or published about Canada that uses a Marxist critique of capitalism and its dynamics. This book aims to advance such thinking by analysing the reasons for the openness of the dominion to capitalist domination to labour domination from the United States, and to a sell-out policy in regard to its land and farms. Capitalism is the accepted, and so intellectually an almost invisible, way of life in Canada. Very little has been thought or published about Canada that uses a Marxist critique of capitalism and its dynamics, and this book aims to advance such thinking by analysing the reasons for the openness of the dominion to capitalist domination, first by Europeans and then by Americans, to labour domination from the United States, and to a sell-out policy in regard to its land and farms. The dependency of the Canadian ruling class on foreign capitalists is an important factor in Canada’s continued colonial-mindedness, and the rise of nationalism in Quebec is based on the inevitabilities of the class antagonisms set up by capitalism. The authors believe that it is only through such Marxist theory and practice that a way can be found for Canada to escape at last from imperialist exploitation and that a way can be found to shape a socialist future for the whole country. --Publisher's description

Problems of the increasing rates of failure of modem business organizations are examined, with particular emphasis given to firms in the «million dollar plus» category. On the hypothesis that this problem has evolved from an increasing inability of organizational members to make immediate and accurate decisions, various individual and organizational development methods are examined. A common failing of all of these methods is their inability to train individuals in team behavior— the essence of the business environment. A method of «Team Training» is described that should serve to close the gap between development of competent individuals and the growth of the responsive and successful business organization.

A collective agreement covers only part of the relationship between the employees covered by the agreement and the employer. Some conflicts of interest not covered by the agreement may be resolved voluntarily by negotiation from time to time, but there remain conflicts of interest in which either no resolution can be worked out on one party, the employer, supported by the residual rights doctrine and the agreement, refuses to negotiate. The issue has become a matter of great public controversy in Canada in recent years and was highlighted by the technological change debate.
