This article reviews the increased educational opportunities provided to workers in a number of Western countries, Belgium, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Sweden and the United Kingdom, through national, regional or local legislation or through collective bargaining and other private mechanisms. An attempt has also been made to analyze and compare the Belgian and the French experiences with regard to P.E.L. Finally, this article examines the relevance of the European experience in respect at P.E.L. for policy makers and other interested parties in Canada.

In light of the New Brunswick International Paper Company's experience, the author explores the effect of local conditions and of external economic and organizational factors on the process of accomodation. He also examines the degree to which all the parties involved are willing to reach accommodation in handling ethnic tension at plant level in this mill. An attempt is finally made to indicate the extent to which the finding of this case study might be applicable to other mills.

Collective bargaining has gone through three different stages in US evolution: organizational, containment and accomodation. However, in the last few years, pressures and complexities in collective bargaining have threatened the very existence of this institution. In this article the author explains and analyses recent developments in labour relations, more particularly the creation of committees in large corporations in order to provide for a joint continuing study of the problems and issues of mutual interest to both parties.

This paper deals with the workplace implications resulting from the incidence of AIDS for employers, AIDS victims, and coworkers of AIDS virus sufferers in North America. It discusses myths and misconceptions about AIDS as well as the medical facts and the legal aspects of the AIDS controversy. It examines the role of human resource management specialists in handling AIDS concerns, such as testing job applicants, terminating employees with the AIDS virus, developing educational programmes, and writing policy statements. Finally, it makes recommendations on how to effectively deal with the AIDS crisis in workplace settings.
